Due to increasing urbanization, the demands and needs of economic development and commodities such as basic food, housing, personal mobility and energy, have increased. That is why today, more than ever, we are concerned about global warming and the scarcity of natural resources. Since buildings are responsible for approximately 40% of total end use of energy, we, as facility managers, aim at a combined demand reduction and fuel substitution using renewable technologies.

AKTOR's attitude towards the environment
Respecting and protecting the environment provides a strategy for the company's long term and eco-friendly development. Compliance with national and European environmental legislative requirements as well as continuous improvement of the company's environmental performance are the axes on which its environmental policy moves, contributing, at the same time, to the overall sustainable development. As part of continuous and on-going improvement of its environmental performance, AKTOR implements its Environmental Management System, which is verified according to EMAS and certified according to ISO 14001:2004.
Greenbuilding - Energy Saving
Within the framework of Sustainable Development, AKTOR constructed the Headquarters building of the Group according to the specifications of the European GreenBuilding Program. As a result, AKTOR has achieved to save 26% of its energy consumption and since 2007 it has officially kept the status of a GreenBuilding Partner. Investing in the environment has proven to produce significant benefits, beyond those ones concerning the environment. AKTOR is trying to promote the principles of the GreenBuilding Program to its interested parties, taking always into consideration their business intentions and targets.
Greenbuilding – Certification Systems
AKTOR FM is accredited to undertake projects which require LEED and DGNB certification.
LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a program that provides third-party verification of green buildings. LEED is transforming the way we think about how our buildings and communities are designed, constructed, maintained and operated across the globe. It is a green building tool that addresses the entire building lifecycle recognizing best-in-class building strategies.
The DGNB System provides an objective description and assessment of the sustainability of buildings and urban districts. Quality is assessed comprehensively over the entire life cycle of the building. Due to its flexibility it can be tailored precisely to various uses of a building and even to meet country-specific requirements. The outstanding fulfillment of up to 50 sustainability criteria from the quality sections ecology, economy, socio-cultural aspects, technology, process work flows and site are certified.
Award for environmental Management of Construction
AKTOR participated in 2009 in the third (as well as in the previous two) competition of Hellenic Business Awards for the Environment, which are organized in Greece, corresponding to the European Business Awards for the Environment, that is organized in every member state of the European Union.
These awards have constituted a European institution since 1987 and they aim to the recognition and promotion of businesses’ environmental practices for the protection of the environment as well as raising business sensitivity in environmental issues. In the framework of these competitions, AKTOR presented an integrated sustainable development strategy and was nominated with the first award for environmental management that the company implements in construction, keeping the advantage of the environmentally friendliest business in the construction sector.
Through the afore-mentioned actions, AKTOR aims at the transition from the present phase of construction to the next phase which is the "sustainable construction". This term refers to a construction method beneficial to the environment, the society and economic prosperity.
